About

Julie Corbet is a Byron Bay painter of expressive and often moody works, undertaken in a playful and meditative way. Like many painters working with abstraction, the process of painting and constant experimentation often transcend the subject, with an outcome that emerges rather than initially conceived.
Julie trained as an artist in the Northern Rivers and has exhibited locally since 2009. She has been successful in various local art prize shows.

Artist Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT  2024
My work resides within the genre of fluid abstraction, where the essence of movement
and spontaneity takes center stage. In this exploration, I harness the unique properties of
paint, allowing its fluid consistency to dictate the rhythm and flow across the canvas.
Each stroke becomes a dance, a dialogue between the medium and the surface, as
colors intertwine and merge, creating a dynamic interplay of form and emotion.
The act of painting transforms into a meditative process where I relinquish control and
embrace the unpredictable nature of the materials. The paint, with its viscosity and
fluidity, becomes a living entity responding to gravity, texture and the environment. This
interaction evokes a sense of freedom, inviting viewers to experience the artwork as a
moment in time-capturing the essence of movement and the beauty of impermanence.
Through my work, I aim to evoke feelings of tranquility and wonder, encouraging viewers
to immerse themselves in the vibrant colors and organic shapes that emerge. Each piece
is an invitation to explore the depth of abstraction, to find meaning in the chaos, and
appreciate the beauty that arises from the interplay chance and intention.
In this journey of fluid abstraction, I celebrate the transformative power of paint, allowing
it to flow, merge and evolve, creating a visual symphony that resonates with the viewer’s
own emotions and experiences. My hope is that each artwork serves as a portal to a
world where movement, color and form converge, inviting contemplation and connection.

SUYULA 2015

Suyula is Arabic for fluidity.

My work is under the genre of Fluid Abstraction.

The paint is the consistency that allows it to move and flow across the canvas. Psychologically when we are in the flow we are performing an activity fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement and enjoyment in the process. In essence, flow is characterized by complete absorption in what one does.

The IChing talks about the fluidity of water as an example for living. It flows. It fills up the places through which it flows. It does not hesitate. It remains true to itself under all conditions. Likewise when the Artist is sincere the heart becomes free to interpret the situation. It comes about naturally that the action we take will succeed.
